This West Vancouver condo reno was inspired by a mid-Century modern teak dining table as well as collections of pottery, woven vessels and art which the clients had collected over the years. These empty-nesters were downsizing from a large family home into a condo that was considerably smaller, older and had not been renovated since the ‘80’s. Our design challenge was to edit furniture & collectables to fit the new space while ensuring many of the items so dear to our clients were included and mixed in such a way that the space did not feel cluttered. Ultimately all of the original furniture was replaced with the exception of a teak dining table which became the inspiration for the style & mood of the new space. A storied pine chest with great sentimental value was also upcycled. Art was organized and framed by mood & colour as opposed to artist […]

The original Tudor-style home with it’s small rooms was far too traditional and disjointed for this busy family’s taste and lifestyle. Walls were removed, layers of LED lighting were incorporated in to a neutral palette and fabulous textures were introduced to create a bright, contemporary, open-concept, family-friendly environment for entertaining, living and chilling.       This nature-inspired family home nestled in to the mountains of West Vancouver, BC represents the perfect oasis for an active family of 5 plus 2 dogs. The calming mood is achieved through simplistic clean lines combined with fantastic textures. Furniture is arranged in groupings with plenty of open space around each grouping. A neutral palette and an emphasis on texture throughout keeps the open-concept space warm and inviting.   Makers-made wood stools double as small tables or seats and wood and resin stump tables by MTH Woodworks are whimsical and functional works of art. When I began writing about this project I was torn regarding how I should categorize it. As you know, I like to write about the influence on design, whether it be a fashion influence, influenced by nature or influenced by travel. Ultimately, given the location of this original mid-century modern home in West Vancouver’s British Properties the design was greatly influenced by it’s natural surroundings. However, the modern style of the home would also influence the design as would the client’s personal desire to introduce a touch of understated elegance to the space. The original ensuite was a small dark space.  While breathtakingly beautiful, the tall trees of the North Shore Mountains often make for dreary interior spaces so increasing the level of light in this master ensuite was absolutely essential. A neutral palette was selected to emphasize the modern, airy and bright aspect of the new space. A floating […]

This project is one which was definitely inspired by nature. The waterfront property has been in the family for years, yet never developed. My clients were so excited to be building their dream retirement home on such an exquisite piece of land. The end result needed to feel as though one were living on a cruise ship. With vistas of bald eagles, pods of orca, neighbouring deer, tranquil sunsets and sparkling ocean as far as the eye can see, the mood had to be one of subtlety, softness and sanctuary.   The driftwood, beach pebbles and blue of the ocean was the inspiration for the colour scheme. Cool white walls were warmed by brushed oak floors and beams tinted with a subtle hint of bluish-green stain. Clean lines in both the furnishings, built-ins and fireplace surround allowed for artistic pieces such as the driftwood floor lamp and the occasional collection […]
