Our Personal Design Projects – What We Are Designing, Styling Or Redoing In Our Own Homes This Weekend

Just because our bigger design projects are currently halted, does not mean that we aren’t working on personal projects – stuff in our homes. I was so curious about what my team was planning to restyle and/or design and figured if I was curious maybe you would be, too. There is no weekend requirement to design their homes, but as editors and designers for a design site, you can imagine it’s a hobby of all of ours. So here is what the EHD design and editorial team is up to in their homes.

Me. Emily Henderson

At the mountain house there isn’t too much to do design or style-wise (at least not that doesn’t require shopping and its too cold to start the deck or landscaping). All I do is cook, clean, craft, clean, play, clean, etc. But I have been hoarding this chair for a couple of years, so

Prefab homes from Plant Prefab and Koto channel Scandinavian style

Koto, the U.K. studio behind sleek prefab houses, cabins, and playhouses, is now collaborating with California-based prefab powerhouse, Plant Prefab, on two new home designs. The studio’s Piha and Yksi concepts will soon join Plant Prefab’s sustainability-focused LivingHomes line.

Piha, which starts from $612,000 for the module (and from $830,400 for all hard costs), is a full-on house whose 2,184 square feet bend into an L-shape. The timber-clad design features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two courtyards, and a deck designed for outdoor gatherings. The charred timber facade is interrupted by big stretches of windows that slide open to connect the inside of the house to the landscape, while the bedrooms are located in a separate wing of the house for maximum privacy.

Rammed Earth Solar Homes Inc.

Atlanta, GA-based architect and interior designer
Johnna Barrett recently completed construction of a
home in Alamosa, Colo., about one year after a workshop-consultation
with Quentin. The home’s internet unveiling includes
this appreciation:

“A very special thanks also goes out to
Quentin Branch who provided the consulting services
for the rammed earth walls. Quentin offers a hands-on
workshop near Tucson, AZ and is probably the best
resource in the country for this construction type.
He and his wife Julie welcomed me into their home
and spent many hours reviewing drawings and details
of the design. Quentin’s son, Toby Branch was onsite
for the first couple of days of the project as well,
helping instruct the crew in the process.”

As Homes Serve More Purposes, Smart Decor is Key, Says L.A.-Based Designer

Los Angeles-based designer Marissa Zajack, founder of Marissa Zajack Creative, recently marked her commercial interior design debut and the expansion of her creative studio with the launch of chic Downtown L.A. dining destination, Red Herring (which is currently available for pickup and delivery).

Ms. Zajack, who previously worked as a graphic designer in the entertainment industry, is also currently working on three residential projects in Los Angeles—her own four-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot apartment, one for the owners of Red Herring (after doing the restaurant, they hired her for their home), and one for a Hollywood industry executive.

Ms. Zajack’s previous work in the entertainment industry as a graphic designer has informed her current interior style, where she often applies a vibrant visual palette that is polished, but still fun.

10 Ways To Bring Charm To Your Home’s Exterior

Laura Gaskill, Houzz Contributor

Whether you have a cottage that needs a little TLC or a nondescript colonial you’d love to inject with a bit more personality, deciding on changes to the exterior can be tricky. It’s important not to force a completely unrelated style on your home, but the right exterior enhancements can significantly improve your home’s curb appeal.

1. Add a covered entrance. A bit of cover overhead is welcome when you’re trying to get in the door in a rainstorm, but even more important for our purposes, a covered entrance can do wonders for a home’s curb appeal.

28 outdoor projects everyone should know about

A small portico topped with a pediment, like the one shown here, works well with colonial-style homes and is enough to add definition to the entrance. Covered porches are a natural fit for cottages and Craftsman homes — if you have the
