With its eclectic, authentic charm and renovated historic properties, Birmingham has plenty of inspiration and resources for the local interior designers. The city is home to the highly successful regional magazine, Southern Living, and an incredible selection of antique stores, art galleries, and upscale boutiques.
Among the decorators in the Birmingham metro area, there are 15 who truly shine in their field. Listed below, in no particular order, are the city’s top interior designers. Browse through our list, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite in the poll below. We think we’ve done a great job finding Birmingham’s top design talent, but if you think we forgot someone, let us know in the comments below.
Marjorie Johnston & Wendy Barze
The rooms created by Marjorie Johnston and Co. Interiors and Design tend towards classicism with a twist. The aesthetic philosophy of the mother/daughter team incorporates fine antiques and affordable details. Marjorie left a career in nutritional sciences to pursue interior design mid-life, and has been featured in Southern Accents, Birmingham Home & Garden Magazine, and Pinnacle Living. Wendy obtained a degree in art history, and contributes interior concepts and design workups.
Sarah specializes in remodeling, and thrives on “reassigning” spaces in collaboration with a contractor or architect. The Mississippi native is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, later pursuing a design education at the Auburn University School of Architecture. Along with a passion for interiors, Sarah has a deep appreciation for floral design, fine art, pottery, and specialty ceramics. Her projects have been featured in national magazines Renovation Style, Southern Living, and Do It Yourself.
Lisa Caldwell Flake
As the daughter of designer Mary Ruth Caldwell, Lisa grew up surrounded by fabrics, blueprints, and creative brainstorming. Bringing her boundless enthusiasm and natural talent, she joined her mother in the design field in 1998. She studied at the University of Alabama, and owns Caldwell Flake along with Mary Ruth. Known for her sense of style, Lisa was recently featured in Birmingham Home & Garden and several fashion and design blogs.
Laurl’s pursuit of good design has taken her to the top schools in the field. Most recently, she earned a master’s degree in interior design from Savannah College of Art and Design. She started out working in antique stores, and continues to seek out beautiful things for her clients and customers. A proponent of green design, Laurl believes that adding antiques is as green as using renewable materials.
Charlie & Ramona Griffin
Husband and wife team Charlie and Ramona created G&G Interior Design in 2007. Their goal is to connect with people who have never used an interior designer before, because they love to surprise clients with the thoughtfulness and care they put into each project. Charlie and Ramona do not have a “signature style,” because they realize that each client and space is different and special. G&G Interior Design recently won the Jack Davis Professional Achievement Award for Interior Design.
Mandi Smith T
Mandi’s goal is to make interior design accessible to people who might not think they can afford it. She believes that a home can be made beautiful on any budget. Mandi has an extensive knowledge of online and design resources to enhance homes for a fresh, current, and personal look. She encourages her clients to discover their own sense of style and become confident in their own design abilities.
Betsy has 24 years of experience, and specializes in interior architectural planning and custom furniture in addition to interior design. Aiming to create spaces that genuinely feel like home, Betsy begins by inquiring about her client’s daily patterns. She studied interior design at Auburn University and the University of Alabama. Betsy was named to House Beautiful’s “Top 125 American Designers” and Southern Accent’s “Four Under Forty” list.
Leigh Ann Harris
From the time she helped renovate an investment property with her parents, Leigh Ann knew she wanted to be an interior designer when she grew up. She attended the premiere interior design program at Auburn University, through which she was able to study architecture in Italy. The Birmingham native loves scouring flea markets and antique shops for unique finds. In addition to designing interior spaces, she enjoys designing jewelry for her hobby-turned-business.
Erin started out in commercial design working for J. Crew in New York. In 2009, she opened SWAG Design Studio in Birmingham. The 2000 square foot design center provides innovative solutions for real estate developers, builders, and renovators with an in-house design team. Due to the success of her business, she recently opened a second location in Auburn. Erin has been featured on television, and in publications like The Birmingham News, B-Metro Magazine, and Birmingham Magazine.
Lindsey’s design aesthetic fuses modern sensibility with a classic design approach, while reflecting her clients’ ideals. Her signature style is a fresh, simple, and understated look. She carefully considers the architecture of a space to ensure a cohesive design concept. Lindsey’s work has been showcased in the national shelter magazines Southern Living and House Beautiful.
Cindi B. Jones
Cindi has always wanted to help people that were intimidated by the idea of a “stereotypical” designer. She believes that her clients should have the room of their dreams, that just feels right. Cindi originally founded her business, Savvy Shoestring Interiors in Illinois, relocating the company to Birmingham in 2006. She believes in building relationships with her clients, and creating a look that reflects their personal preferences while remaining on budget.
Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Collette brought many years of interior design experience to Alabama when she opened Gracefully Done in 2007. Her design philosophy is that everyone has their own way of expressing themselves, and their home should reflect this. She works closely with her clients to make their design dreams a reality. Collette specializes in creating elegant spaces that are both functional and comfortable.
Tammy received a degree in studio art and art history from Wake Forest University, and a degree in interior design from The American College of Applied Art. She originally founded her design firm in South Carolina, and has completed residential projects ranging from mountain to beach houses. Tammy is known for infusing a casual southern elegance into classic interiors. Inspired by her travels, she always respects the architecture and setting of a project.
Marianne began her career in the flooring industry, and founded Marianne Strong Interiors in 2007. She chronicles good design in her blog Haven & Home, earning national recognition as a designer and blogger. Marianne was chosen as the interior designer for the St. Vincent’s hospital and ABC 33/40’s Nursery Giveaway. Her curated eclectic style has been highlighted in Birmingham Home & Garden, and the decorating guide, “The Meghan Method.”
Bill brings 25 years of design experience to Habitation & Bill Aroosian Designs. He has created warm, comfortable, cozy and inviting spaces from Manhattan to Los Angeles, and throughout the United States. Bill has also worked as a manager for the Alabama-based outdoor furniture company, Summer Classics. His eye for detail allows Bill to create spaces that his clients will appreciate for years to come.
