Homeowners have shared the interior design trends they think will ‘age poorly’ in a hilarious Reddit thread, including farmhouse-style lights, sliding barn doors and any kind of quote on the wall.

Thousands of people listed the ‘current aesthetic trends they think will age poorly’, while others said they felt ‘seen’ by the idea that some of the trends in their home will ever date.

The first thing that many agreed on in the thread was word signs.

Word signs

‘Yes, we know you “eat” in the kitchen,’ one person wrote.

Another said: ‘Anything that says live, laugh, love… or, honestly, any combination of those words’.

While a third said they ‘already think’ the live, laugh, love moment has passed.

‘I feel like the peak Live Laugh Love moment was like, 2011 or something. That feels already dated to me,’ one woman wrote.

The second trend some highlighted as soon-to-be-dated is the trend for farmhouse-style lights, particularly when it's not a farm house (stock image)

Farmhouse-style lights

The second trend some highlighted as soon-to-be-dated is the trend for farmhouse-style lights:

‘Those totally overused “farmhouse” light fixtures – you know, the ones where it’s just an empty square (or rectangle) frame around a bulb,’ one person wrote.

Another went even further, listing the ‘urban farmhouse or whatever you call it trend’.

‘The whole package includes: white exterior with black window frames, interior: white walls, white shaker cabinet doors, grey vinyl plank floors, rectangular light fixture about the island, barn doors, fake reclaimed wood,’ one person said.

‘As a variation to it, the cabinets are blue with yellowish pulls.’

Some said they can't stand all-grey interiors, associating it with house flippers and highlighting it as a 'boring' colour (stock image)

All-gray interiors

Some said they can’t stand all-grey interiors.

‘Flipper gray everything is so boring,’ one person wrote.

‘I’m apathetic about gray paint but I loathe the fake gray floorboards,’ another added.

But a third was quick to defend gray, writing: ‘Gray isn’t just a real estate trend. It’s huge in everything from web design to fashion because it’s easy on the eyes and works with just about any accent colour you want. I don’t really see the gray going away anytime soon.’

Sliding barn doors

Included under the farmhouse bracket was the current vogue for sliding barn doors.

‘Barn doors and farmhouse sinks, unless the house is actually on acreage/a farm,’ one person said.

Another added: ‘Those goddamn barn doors. Make it a pocket or leave it alone’.

Moroccan-inspired tiles

Moroccan tiles are huge right now, particularly in bathrooms where it can often pay to make a style statement.

Poll

Which current trend do you think is the worst?

  • Word signs 448 votes
  • Farmhouse lights 10 votes
  • All-gray interiors 227 votes
  • Sliding barn doors 50 votes
  • Moroccan-inspired tiles 51 votes
  • All white everything 84 votes
  • Blue cabinets with gold hardware 86 votes
  • Brown granite countertops 128 votes
  • Fake hardwood flooring 73 votes
  • Painted brick 104 votes

But some Redditors take umbrage with them, with one writing:

‘The Moroccan tile everywhere. It fits in some houses, but it’s being put everywhere right now. I think it’s not going to age well except in houses where it’s aligned with the rest of the architecture’.

Painting everything white

A quick and easy way to modernise somewhere, many people say, is to give it a lick of paint.

And no colour is more popular than white in this respect.

‘Paint everything that’s old white is such a trend that will date,’ one person wrote.

‘All. White. Everything,’ another added.

A third wrote: ‘Everything being some shade of grey or white. That sh*t is gonna elicit reactions like lime green tile in a bath. People will refer to monochromatic homes as mental hospitals in 20 years’.

Blue cabinets with gold hardware

Others didn’t like the current trend for blue cabinetry with gold hardware that is extremely popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

‘Blue cabinets. Also light blue on top, dark blue on bottom. They never, ever get the colour right,’ one person wrote.

‘The tired blue cabinet/gold hardware fever for kitchens and bathrooms,’ another added.

Brown granite countertops

Also in the kitchen, many dissed brown granite countertops as like ‘something from my chain smoking great grandma’s house’.

‘Brown granite countertops with white appliances is the worst,’ another added.

Fake hardwood flooring

When it comes to flooring, many people go for fake ‘quality’ hardwood flooring at the moment.

‘Fake hardwood flooring will be the avocado shag carpet of our time,’ one person wrote.

Another added: ‘LVP flooring – sorry it doesn’t look like wood. Will be another dead giveaway of the era in short order’.

Painted brick

Finally, many said they can’t stand painted brick.

‘Painted brick, if you didn’t want to look at it, render or stucco it, or if you want to see the out line of the brick, bag it,’ one person wrote.

‘Painting is a quick and not well thought process of restoring brickwork.’
