AN INTERIOR design pro has taken to TikTok to reveal the common mistake that everyone makes when decorating their living room.
Sophie shared how the size of your rug is key to making the room look cosy – and that they fell into the trap of buying one too small when they moved into their new home.

The TikTokker, known online as @oldtonewhome, regularly shares updates on her home renovation and interior design tips with her 10,300 followers.
In a new reel, she said: “We made one of the most common interior design mistakes when we first moved into our house and I’m only just rectifying it.
“The rug in our living area was just too small.
“It touched the corners of each sofa and had our coffee table on top, but it just wasn’t big enough for the space.
“So we found this massive 300 x 400cm rug online for only £300 which was great, and it looks so much better.”
Below the video, she added: “Make sure you don’t make the same mistake as us and get the bigger rug!!
“A rug should always be bigger than all the furniture that sits upon it as otherwise, it will make the space look smaller and fragmented.
“I love our new living area with this rug! I feel like it’s really helped to break up our open plan space and it feels much more cosy.”
Fans loved Sophie’s tip, with the video gaining more than 4,800 likes and 281,000 views.
In the comments, the content creator’s followers shared their thoughts, with one writing: “Looks so much better.”

Although not everyone agreed that bigger is better, with another commenting: “Just carpet it at this point. 2 inches around the edges look silly. B+ for effort tho.”
Someone else put: “Looked better before. You’ve got nice floors, why cover so much of it up?”
Sophie replied: “It’s SO much better having a warm rug under your feet and especially now with a new baby!”
