8 Mid-Century Modern Decor & Style Ideas

If it wasn’t obvious from all the pastel pink sofas and Danish sideboards lingering on your newsfeeds, midcentury-modern decor is still having a moment. Although sleek and timeless, the style can quickly monopolize a room (or make it appear dated) if it isn’t executed with care. The key to making the aesthetic look decidedly non–Brady Bunch is understanding its history and creating an effortlessly modern mix. New to the style but love the look? Learn all about it and get tips from the experts on how to add a Mad Men vibe to your space with midcentury-modern decor.

What is midcentury design?

The movement spanned from about 1933 to 1965 and included architecture as well as industrial, interior, and graphic design. Designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Arne Jacobsen, and George Nelson created iconic furniture and lighting that are still highly coveted. The architectural style, seen

For many of our favorite designers, great style started at home. In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked everyone from Bobby Berk of Queer Eye to designer and author Justina Blakeney about the design lessons they learned from their moms (or grandmothers and other mother figures).

What are the tips they picked up from the most important women in their lives? They learned how to stay organized, mix high-end and vintage pieces, incorporate art into a space, and more. Some of them, like Nate Berkus, were lucky enough to have moms who were interior designers themselves. Read on for the best lessons that continue to guide these designers today.

Western Style House Exterior Designs

3

Building a new home can be a difficult task, especially without the right design. After all, not every design is meant for everyone. Some designs could be too old, out of style, or just not feel right.

But one of these western-style designs could be for you. Check them out.

One look at this modern home is enough to have jaws drop. There is not a single curve on it. Everything from its roof to windows and edges are sharp like that of a square. This makes the house look all the more modern and a design from the west. It has 2 storeys and the flat roof gives it a more elongated look. If you want your home to be like this then just grab it before anyone else would!

This is another house inspired by the West. Again, it has no curvy edges or a high roof.

Prefab homes from Plant Prefab and Koto channel Scandinavian style

Koto, the U.K. studio behind sleek prefab houses, cabins, and playhouses, is now collaborating with California-based prefab powerhouse, Plant Prefab, on two new home designs. The studio’s Piha and Yksi concepts will soon join Plant Prefab’s sustainability-focused LivingHomes line.

Piha, which starts from $612,000 for the module (and from $830,400 for all hard costs), is a full-on house whose 2,184 square feet bend into an L-shape. The timber-clad design features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two courtyards, and a deck designed for outdoor gatherings. The charred timber facade is interrupted by big stretches of windows that slide open to connect the inside of the house to the landscape, while the bedrooms are located in a separate wing of the house for maximum privacy.

Decorating Styles- Discover Your Decorating Style

Do you have any idea about what decorating style you like?

Of all the things that we learn while going through so many years of school, what decorating style we’d like to see in our living room or what era of furniture would best complement the layout of our bedrooms usually isn’t one of them. Whether you’ve been to school for design or not, decorating is always a personal process. That doesn’t change whether you’re doing it for yourself, working with a designer, or designing for someone else. When it’s your home, everything hinges on what you like and in the end, only you can say whether the result is something that you’ll be happy living with. It’s always easy to tell whether or not you like something but sometimes it can be very difficult to say for sure what you like or why.

That’s one of the reasons why
