Halloween is basically here so you probably have a plan for how you’ll spend the night. Whether you’ll be leaving out a bowl of candy for trick-or-treaters, having a Zoom costume party, or simply ignoring it altogether and starting to watch Christmas movies already, it’s set to be a Halloween like any other. But no matter how creative you’re getting, just know in your heart that you don’t have the coolest Halloween set-up because this guy does with his high-tech candy chute.
We first spotted this thanks to a TikTok by a user named @kinz1999 who saw the device while he was driving one day. While we’ve written about some simple candy chutes and slides designed to slide down candy to trick-or-treaters from a distance before, we’ve never seen anything like this. The chute is the length of a full yard. At one end sits a whole tower of candy, and on the other, a button that says “Push Button For Candy.” When you do so, a voice says: “Please hold, your candy is on the way. Thank you!” Suddenly smoke billows from the tower and there’s your candy! Watch it in action below:
A small plaque next to it explains that it’s called the Candy Cannon and that the family is taking donations for The Boston Resiliency Fund, which aims to “provide food for children and seniors, technology for remote learning for students, and support to first responders and healthcare workers in the City of Boston” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The TikTok quickly went viral, and now, thanks to some info in @kinz1999’s bio, we know who to thank for the cannon. It’s the work of John Downs, an Animatronics Design & Fabrication artist, who has become known in the city for his amazing holiday displays. That’s his Instagram above where you can get an even cooler view of the cannon. You can check out more of his work on his website here and donate to the Boston Resiliency Fund here.
