When jewelry designer Claudia Dockery moved cross-country from New York to Los Angeles, she only brought a few of her most beloved items with her. So she had to do some serious shopping in order to furnish the 1920s duplex she was renting in Silver Lake. Luckily she didn’t have to travel far to find her dream interior design store, since Candid Home was just a couple blocks away.
The first time Claudia visited Candid Home, which specializes in vintage furniture and contemporary decor, she was actually looking for display pieces for her Surfing Cowgirl jewelry popups. Owner Ashley Leahy helped her pick out a curtain to use as a tablecloth and the rest was history. “I basically fell in love with her store,” remembers Claudia. “The popup looked fantastic and I wanted my house to be an extension of that. Ashley sells unique, colorful pieces that I’d never seen before, things that are just so cool and that I’ll have forever. I was so excited. And then we became friends too.”
While the two women bonded over a shared love for a vibrant, playful aesthetic, they didn’t become besties right away. Instead, they grew closer each time Claudia made a purchase and sought out Ashley’s advice on how to arrange it. Gradually, Ashley began decorating the place in a more hands-on capacity and their friendship bloomed.
Since Claudia’s century-old cottage was already a mishmash of precious historical details and contemporary finishes, she and Ashley had free rein to mix eras and influences throughout—just as Ashley does in her shop. “There’s no age or style that I wouldn’t do, from the ’40s to now” she says. “It’s just about being a little different and fun and colorful.”
